TLAS NEWS
UPDATE #4: TLAS Votes To Dissolve
The members of TLAS voted on October 21, by a landslide, to shut down our association, 44 years after it was established. Of the approximate 1,500 members, 629 sent in their proxy votes, well over the 100 required for a quorum The total vote to dissolve TLAS was 613 in favor, with nine against and seven abstentions.
The meeting was conducted via ZOOM, a new experience for many but our Secretary, Carolyn McCandless. who organized the meeting, had millennials on hand to sort out the few technical glitches that occurred. About 100 members took part in the ZOOM meeting and were able to ask questions through ZOOM, but not speak. The only speakers were the four panelists, President Alan Wragg, Treasurer George Vollmuth, Carolyn and Jeremy Main, who led the effort to award scholarships with the funds still held by TLAS.
Alan and George both spoke feelingly about what TLAS has meant to them, what pride they had in working for such an outstanding and successful organization as Time Inc. and for the good friendships developed there and maintained through TLAS. They said that unfortunately because Time Inc. no longer had office space for us, or a meeting room, and could not subsidize out meals and other activities, there was no choice but to ring an end to TLAS. Moreover, most of the members had signed up long ago for lifetime memberships for a one-time fee and the only continuing income could come from a dwindling number of annual members.
Jeremy said that of the funds remaining in the TLAS bank account, about $60,000 after estimated future expenses, $25,000 would go to establish a TLAS-endowed scholarship at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Another $25,000, if that amount remains available, which seems likely, will endow a scholarship for journalism majors at Mercy College, a small and diverse school in Dobbs Ferry, New York. If money is still available after these two donations, the balance will go to the School Life Media, a non-profit established by Peter Meyer, an Alumnus. It is described as a literacy through journalism program for middle school students in Hudson, New York. The children learn the five Ws of journalism, and how to listen and take notes, how to write up the results, how put it all in a dummy newspaper.
Our decision to dissolve and accompanying documents now go to the New York State Attorney General for approval and it could take several months before we get a decision. —Posted 9/26//20
